STUDENT TRAVEL & RESEARCH FUNDS

Details
Six awards are available for students to support an independent study project, or to defray the cost of attending a New School program in India, China, or Himalaya region (e.g. Lang’s Urban Change & Chinese Language in Shanghai for undergraduate students). The field visit has to be taken by the end of Summer 2014. The funds could be used towards expenses such as airfare, local transportation, room and board, and interpreters. Students interested in exploring the Himalaya region as part of their field of study are eligible to apply; research may be done in other countries of the region, but field visits to India and/or China must be included.
Eligibility
- Be a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student in any discipline
- For undergraduates, a minimum of 12 credits completed, and for graduate students, a minimum of 9 credits completed by the end of Fall 2013, and planning to enroll in the Fall semester 2014.
- Have a minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.3
- Know a New School faculty member who can supervise the project
- Prior knowledge of India and China is not necessary. MA and PhD students specializing in India and China may apply. However, priority will be given to non-specialists looking to deepen their knowledge of one or both countries.
Application Process
A completed application must include:
- Curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of academic accomplishments and interests
- Statement of purpose (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced) describing:
- How the funds will expand your knowledge of India and/or China
- Your independent research project or The New School summer program
- A signed New School Faculty Mentor Form
Applications on any topic are eligible, but preference will be given to those addressing one of the themes of the three past ICI cohorts.
Award Requirements
Please refer to full program guidelines. Recipients of ICI travel/research fund are required to make a public presentation of their works in September 2014. They must also submit a final written report on their project by mid-November 2014.
