Congratulations to Joe Thomas Karackattu, ICI Fellow ( 2017-2019), and Assistant Professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at IIT Madras, who has a recent paper in the journal Asian Affairs on the making of the India-China boundary. “The Corrosive Compromise of the Sino-India Border Management Framework: From Doklam to Galwan” can be accessed here. (For more on the topic of India China border issues remember to register here for the ICI panel discussion on that topic on September 22 at 9AM US EST.) Joe also recently received the Young Faculty Recognition Award 2020 at IIT Madras.
Joe’s new film on Tamil Nadu’s Chinese connections is also coming out soon. “Those4Years” tells the story of Chinese workers who were trafficked to Southern India by British colonists in the mid-19th century to work on tea plantations. The film journeys across three countries and through numerous colonial office records to retrace the lives of these forced laborers, some whose descendants are also located.
