On October 14, ICI hosted a talk by Jessica J. Lee, Senior Research Fellow in the East Asia Program of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft titled “Anti-Asian Racism in the Era of Great Power Competition.” Lee, co-author of the influential 2021 Foreign Affairs article (“Rivalry without Racism”) discussed the historical connections between American foreign policy in Asia and treatment of Asian Americans. She also pointed out patterns of groupthink among the foreign policy establishment in Washington, DC, and encouraged rethinking American foreign policy assumptions regarding American interests in Asia. Professor Ying Chen of the NSSR Economics Department participated as discussant.
