Former ICI fellow David López-García has started a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago in the Department of Urban Planning and Policy. Over the next few years, he will research shifts in urban spatial structure in large Latin American urban regions and their implications for accessibility to jobs and workers’ quality of life. Dr. López-García will also look at the policy-making process of state-led efforts that aim to influence the evolution of urban spatial structure.
In parallel, he will serve as the Academic Coordinator for the Latin American chapter of the International Network for Transport and Accessibility in Low-Income Communities (INTALInC-LAC) for 2023-2026. This is a research network comprised of 60+ scholars and practitioners from universities and organizations in Latin America, North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
David López-García was a student fellow at India China Institute in 2018. He was working on a project – ‘Political Economy of Infrastructure and Intra-Urban Inequality in the capitalist City.’ Through ICI funding Dr. López-García traveled to Shanghai to examine how the role of infrastructure development was providing or denying access to economic opportunities.
