Starr Student Award 2025
The India China Institute (ICI) is pleased to announce the Starr Foundation Student Award for 2025 for full-time students at The New School (TNS). Undergraduate or graduate students who work on India, China, or both are welcome to apply!
Awardees will receive $3,500 to travel to India or China for independent research on chosen research projects. Award recipients will post blogs about their projects, present research findings, and submit final products.

An information session and presentations given by the previous student cohort of 2024 award recipients was held on Wednesday, September 25, at 3:30 pm ET at the Starr Foundation Hall (UL102, 63 5th Avenue). 2023-2024 Postdoctoral Fellowship – The Post-liberal World: Perils and Prospects
The India China Institute (ICI) of The New School seeks applications for a one-year position in 2023-24 as Postdoctoral Fellow in our “Global China and India in a Post-Liberal World” research cluster. The fellow will be in residence at ICI for the 2023-24 academic year.
This theme of the 2023-24 postdoctoral fellowship is motivated by global challenges to the Western-led liberal order and the influence that India and China have in bringing changes to existing regimes or in creating alternatives to the liberal world order. ICI welcomes applications from those whose research focuses on emerging alternative orders in geopolitics; authoritarian governance domestically and regionally; climate change and energy security; digital governance; science, technology and infrastructure; populism and ethno-nationalism; migration and citizenship; public health and social policy; higher education and knowledge production; and South-South cooperation. The empirical scope of the research should focus on China or India, or engage with China-India comparisons and connections, or global flows that India or China are prominently part of. Applications are welcome from all social science and humanities disciplines, including interdisciplinary PhD programs.
ICI serves as a hub for research and public engagement on India, China, and beyond. Its mission is to address issues of global concern through collaborative research and the formation of transnational networks of scholars and practitioners based in India, China, and elsewhere around the world. We believe that studying and thinking about the pasts and presents of India, China, and other countries in the global South can provide new frameworks that provide alternative perspectives to dominant understandings of global politics, culture, and design.

Work Modality
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow is expected to work on-campus due to the nature of the work and in accordance with university policies.
Salary and Benefits

2022-2023 Postdoctoral Fellowship, “Cities and Citizenship” (Closed for Application)
The India China Institute (ICI) of The New School seeks applications for a one-year position in 2022-23 as Postdoctoral Fellow in Cities and Citizenship. The fellow will be in residence at ICI for the 2022-23 academic year, to pursue publication and research plans on an existing or new project, to contribute to the ICI Cities and Citizenship research cluster, and relevant ICI events and programs.

The National Bureau of Asian Research
The Chinese Language Fellowship Program (CLFP) is a nationwide initiative to support American Ph.D. students with a fellowship of up to $50,000 so that they can devote one year to intensive Chinese language training at an institution of the fellow’s choice, generally in China or Taiwan. Fellows must be Ph.D. students with a focus on China and policy. Fellows must also demonstrate an intermediate Chinese language ability.

- Youth of Excellence
China Scholarship Council implements the Youth of Excellence Scheme of China Program, to train global leaders. The 12-month curriculum leads to a master’s degree. Certain programs follow the “1+1” paradigm, which requires students to do their full-time basic course work and research in Chinese universities in the first academic year while finishing up their dissertation preparations. Before traveling to China to defend their dissertations as required by the universities, they must work in their home countries during the second academic year and finish their dissertations based on studies and actual work. A degree will be awarded to those who successfully complete the defense.

The Wilson Center China Fellowship is a 1-year non-residential fellowship focusing on China’s impact on Asia or the United States across a wide variety of issue areas. The Wilson Center invites American scholars, practitioners, journalists, and public intellectuals to apply. Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School
The China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellowship offered by the Ash Center at the Harvard Kennedy School is an opportunity for postdoctoral scholars to advance their research on a topic salient to contemporary public policy in China. It is expected that the successful applicant will give at least one research presentation to their peer scholars at the Center during the fellowship period as well as participate in the Center’s publication program. - Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) Scholarship
The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), an advanced research institution funded by the Reserve Bank of India, currently seeks applicants for its IGIDR Scholarship Program which aims to promote research on developmental issues. Eligible candidates should be international students from certain Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam) who are willing to pursue a graduate, postgraduate, or MPhil (Master of Philosophy) studies in a university in India. - ITEC/SCAAP Government of India Fully Funded Scholarships
The Government of India, through the National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), accepts applications for its ITEC/SCAAP Scholarship Program. This scholarship is for international students willing to undergo a training program in India such as the previous 6-week International Training Program on International Marketing and Global Competitiveness, International Training Program on Rural Enterprise Planning and Promotion or Women and Youth Entrepreneurship in Water Supply and Sanitation Development. Currently, there are about 105 available scholarships up for grabs. Eligible applicants are international students from the ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries. They should also be proficient speakers in the English language.
- Coverage: Annual applications for the ITEC/SCAAP Scholarship Program close before the end of June. - KIIT University International Scholarship Program (KUISP)
The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University opens a scholarship program for international students who seek to obtain a degree offered by the KIIT University. Eligible applicants for the KIIT University International Scholarships are students who will enroll in a study program except nursing, architecture, dental, and medicine courses. All nationalities, with the exception of SAARC or South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries) are invited to apply. Priority will be given to applicants who have a financially challenging background.

- Indian School of Business (ISB) International Scholarships
The Indian School of Business opens a scholarship program for international students seeking to pursue a postgraduate degree in business management at the ISB. Eligible candidates should be students who are willing to enroll in the ISB’s one-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP). This academic year, the ISB has a total of 26 available scholarships. All nationalities are welcome to submit their application for the ISB International Scholarships. Eligible applicants should have an accumulated work experience, a valid Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT score, and a certificate of English language proficiency. The program accepts applications per cycle. It is highly recommended to submit applications for Cycle 1 as it has more competitive scholarship benefits. To illustrate, Cycle 1 successful applicants are entitled to a full tuition fee waiver. Also, 50% of the merit and need-based waivers are only available for Cycle 1 applicants. - General Scholarship Scheme (GSS) for Foreign Students
Funded by the Government of India’s Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the General Scholarship Scheme (GSS), provides scholarship awards to international students hoping to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, or research programs in a university in India. Eligible applicants should come from selected Asian, African, and Latin American countries. They should be proficient in the English language since universities in India use the international language for instruction. Undergraduate students should enclose their selected course and (up to 3 university choices). For applicants who wish to acquire a bachelor’s degree in the field of the performance arts, an additional video or audio requirement of their talent should be sent. Postgraduate and research applicants are required to include a summary of their research topic and proposal along with the necessary forms and documents.

Symbiosis International University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) have forged a partnership to provide a scholarship program for international students in India. Over the years the India China Institute has supported dozens of students from The New School and other universities in India and China interested in learning and studying in the region. We have collected a variety of resources that may prove useful for students who want more information about what support is available from the India China Institute, past wisdom from students involved in our program, travel tips and lots more.
